David Called From the Floor

David Called From the Floor

This week's memory verse is Psalm 34:18: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." It's worth reading the whole chapter it comes from — starting with the part most people skip.

The Heading Nobody Reads

Psalm 34 opens with a short note about when David wrote it: "Of David. When he pretended to be insane before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left."

The story behind it is in 1 Samuel 21. David is running from King Saul, who wants him dead. He flees into enemy territory, gets recognized, and in a panic, pretends to be insane — scratching on doors and letting saliva run down his beard — so the king there will dismiss him as harmless. It works. He's driven away.

This is the future king of Israel at maybe the most humiliating moment of his life.

What He Wrote From There

And from there, David writes: "I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears" (Psalm 34:4). And then: "This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles" (Psalm 34:6).

"This poor man." He doesn't dress it up. He doesn't write as a hero or a king. He writes as someone who called from the floor.

Correcting a Quiet Misconception

Most of us carry an unspoken assumption that God hears best when we call from a good place — composed, dignified, spiritually put together. So we wait to call until we can do it with some dignity.

Psalm 34 corrects that from its very first line. The call that God heard came from the lowest point in David's life. And fourteen verses later, the same psalm says: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted." Not close to the composed. Close to the broken.

For This Week

If you said His name yesterday for the Say His Name challenge and it felt too small, too late, or too undignified — David's right there with you. The call counts. It has always counted.
