DELIVERANCE — "Devil in the Water"
"Face to face with who I was and who I wanna be."
Position 3 was the choice. Position 4 is what makes the choice real — not one more resolution you talk yourself into, but something you actually leave behind.
The picture in this song is physical for a reason. "I left the devil in the water" isn't a metaphor for feeling a little lighter. It's a decisive act — going under, and not reaching back for what you left there when you come back up.
That's the difference between this position and every round of "I'll try harder" that came before it. Trying harder keeps the old self in your hands, just managed more carefully. Deliverance actually sets it down — face to face with who you were, and choosing, decisively, not to carry that version forward.
You don't have to feel like a completely different person the moment you come up out of the water. You just have to actually leave what you left there — instead of quietly picking it back up on the walk home.
