Yesterday's chapter said you don't need a stronger will to beat shame — you need a stronger name. Today's Faith Builder shows what that looks like in a real life.
The Man at the Gate
In Acts 3, Peter and John are heading to the temple for afternoon prayer. At the gate called Beautiful, there's a man who has been unable to walk since birth. Every day, people carry him there so he can beg from the worshipers going in.
Acts 4:22 tells us he was over forty years old. That means for more than four decades, this was his life. Everyone in Jerusalem who went to the temple knew him. Not by his name — Scripture never even gives it — but by his label. The lame beggar at the gate.
What Peter Gave Him
The man sees Peter and John and holds out his hand for money. Peter looks straight at him and says, "Look at us!" Then, in verse 6: "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."
Peter takes him by the hand, and instantly the man's feet and ankles become strong. Verse 8 says he jumps to his feet, walks into the temple courts, and goes "walking and jumping, and praising God."
"Whom You See and Know"
A crowd gathers, stunned. And Peter makes sure they understand exactly where this came from. Verse 16: "By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong… as you can all see."
Whom you see and know. Everybody knew this man's label. Everybody had already decided who he was and always would be.
The name of Jesus changed it.
The Label You've Been Carrying
Most of us have a label we've carried a long time. Maybe it was given to us by someone else. Maybe we gave it to ourselves. The divorced one. The addict. The screw-up. The one who always quits. People see it. We see it. And after enough years, it feels permanent.
But there is a Name that has been changing labels for two thousand years — including ones a lot older than yours.
If you did yesterday's Mirror Check, look at the name you crossed out. Then read Acts 3:16 out loud. That label doesn't get the final word.
