Into the Water: An Activity for This Week

Into the Water: An Activity for This Week

This week's DRY GROUND arc is built to be experienced, not just read or watched. Here's an activity for Position 3, THE DEEP, that turns today's teaching into something your body actually does.

What You Need

A bowl. Water. "The Deeps" by Brogan Gaskill & Ian Austin, ready to play. About five minutes.

Into the Water

Fill the bowl and set it in front of you. Take a breath and think about the deep water you're in right now — the situation that's over your head.

Press play. When the chorus arrives, put your hand in the water. All the way in. Leave it there.

While your hand is in the water, pray Isaiah 43:2 out loud — with your own name in it:

"When [your name] passes through the waters, You will be with [your name]. When [your name] passes through the rivers, they will not sweep over [your name]."

Keep your hand in until the song ends. Notice if you want to pull it out early. Notice what it's like to stay.

Why Your Hand Goes In

This activity comes from Joshua 3 — the second time God brought His people through water on dry ground. The Jordan River was at flood stage. God told the priests carrying the ark to step into it. And verses 15-16 say that as soon as their feet touched the water's edge, the water upstream stopped flowing. Verse 17: "…all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground."

The step came before the parting. They didn't get to see the way through first. They got their feet wet in faith, and then God moved.

In this activity, your hand stands in for that step. Putting it in the water before the song ends — before anything changes, before you see the way through — is your way of doing what the priests did: going in first, and trusting God to move.

That's what "The Deeps" sings about too — God telling them to step into the fear and not to stop when they get close, and then making dry ground through the waters. You're not putting your hand in the water to prove you're brave. You're practicing trust in a God who meets you in the water.
