Lead Me to the Cross -- Position 2: Surrender

Lead Me to the Cross -- Position 2: Surrender

SURRENDER — "Lead Me to the Cross"

"Rid me of myself. I belong to You."

Notice what this song doesn't ask for. It doesn't ask God to help manage the image a little better, smooth out the rough edges, make the performance more convincing. It asks to be rid of the whole project.

That's a different request than most of us start with. Most of us bring God our behavior and ask for improvement. This song brings God the self doing the managing and asks to be done with it entirely — "Everything I once held dear, I count it all as lost."

There's something freeing about that trade once you actually make it. Managing a performance is exhausting precisely because it's never finished — there's always another gap to smooth over, another slip to explain away. Surrender isn't one more thing to manage. It's putting down the managing altogether.

Rid me of myself isn't a request to lose who you are. It's a request to stop being the one holding the whole thing together.
