Pull Up a Chair: An Activity for This Week

Pull Up a Chair: An Activity for This Week

This week's OUT OF THE DUST arc is built to be experienced, not just read or watched. Here's an activity for Position 3, THE FRIEND, that turns today's teaching into something you actually do.

What You Need

Two chairs. "Blessed Be" by Cory Asbury, ready to play. About five minutes.

Pull Up a Chair

Set the two chairs facing each other, close together — the way you'd sit across from a friend at a coffee shop. Sit in one.

Read John 15:15 out loud: "I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."

Press play on "Blessed Be." For the length of the song, talk to Jesus the way you'd talk to a friend across the table.

No church voice. No polished prayer. Tell Him what's actually on your mind — what you're worried about, what you're grateful for, what's been strange or hard or funny this week. Friends talk about real things.

Why Two Chairs?

Most of us pray the way we'd address a boss or a judge — formal, careful, a little nervous. That posture comes from the misconception at the heart of today's chapter: that God merely puts up with us, like servants on probation.

But Jesus didn't call His disciples servants. He called them friends — the same disciples who would scatter that very night. Setting up two chairs is a simple, physical way to practice what He actually said. The empty chair isn't empty. That's the point.

"Blessed Be" fits this moment because it's a song of someone stunned that the God of creation would know him by name and call him friend. Let that wonder set the tone.

Do This Along With Us

If you're catching up on this week's arc, Chapters 1 and 2 are linked below. Once you've done it, comment "FRIEND" — or tell us what it felt like to drop the church voice.
