Saved for Something: A Devotional on Ephesians 2:10

Saved for Something: A Devotional on Ephesians 2:10

Yesterday's finale closed out the arc. Today, let's sit with the verse that's been underneath all five days: "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10).

The Misconception: Purpose Is Earned — or Lost

Many of us treat purpose like a prize. If we get our lives together, maybe God will give us something meaningful to do. And if we blow it badly enough, we assume we've forfeited it for good.

Ephesians 2:10 is often quoted on its own, like a motivational poster. But it only makes sense when you read the nine verses that come before it.

Dead

Verse 1: "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins."

Not struggling. Not wounded. Dead. Paul doesn't soften it. This is dust without breath — exactly the picture this week started with.

Made Alive

Then verses 4 and 5 turn everything: "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved."

God did for us what He did in Genesis 2:7. He breathed into the dust.

By Grace, Not Works

Verses 8 and 9 make sure we can't take credit: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast."

For Good Works

And only then comes verse 10.

Notice the order. We are not saved by good works. We're saved for them. The purpose comes after the grace, not before it.

That means you didn't earn your purpose, and you can't un-earn it. It was "prepared in advance" — designed for your hands before you ever woke up ashamed, before you ever failed, before you ever wondered if you mattered.

The Greek word for "handiwork," poiēma, describes something carefully made by an artist. You are not God's afterthought or His repair project. You're His craftsmanship.

Sit With This

What's one good work God might have prepared for your hands this week? It doesn't have to be big. A conversation. A meal. An apology. An encouragement. A phone call you've been putting off.

You don't earn your way into it. You're breathed into it.
