The Grip Was Never What Was Holding It Together

The Grip Was Never What Was Holding It Together

You said it before you'd even confirmed it was true.

Here we go again.

Not out loud. Just the sentence your mind reaches for automatically now, the second the first familiar sign shows up — the message that doesn't come, the number on the screen, the tone in someone's voice you've heard before and know exactly where it leads.

The Rehearsal Before the Evidence

Here's a misconception worth naming plainly: the belief that gripping tight — steering, predicting, bracing early — is actually what keeps the worst outcome from happening. That if you just manage it hard enough, early enough, you can hold the whole thing together yourself.

"Every Minute of It" names exactly this habit: "Time just keeps slippin' if you grip on that wheel too tight... Took me way too long to realize I was tryna control the road I was on." And then the line that reframes the whole habit: "But it's a waste of gasoline."

Not Wisdom. Not Diligence. A Waste of Gasoline.

Notice what the song calls the gripping — not carefulness, not responsibility. A waste of gasoline. Fuel spent on something that was never actually steering the road to begin with.

Proverbs 19:21 says the same thing in different language: "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." Your plans, your bracing, your rehearsed outcomes — they were never actually the thing determining what happened next. They were just costing you something real while accomplishing nothing.

Where This Arc Starts

This is where the arc has to start — not because the grip is shameful, but because you can't loosen a fist you haven't first admitted is closed. If you've been white-knuckling something — a relationship, a diagnosis, a job, a fear that keeps repeating — you're not wrong to notice how tired the gripping has made you. That tiredness might be the first honest signal that the grip was never actually doing the work you thought it was.

This is Chapter One of HERE WE GO AGAIN — five songs, one story, one arc, one encounter with Jesus. New chapter drops tomorrow.
