The Story of NEVER WOULD'VE KNOWN

The Story of NEVER WOULD'VE KNOWN

The noise doesn't announce itself. It just accumulates — one more thing, then another, then the thing after that — until you're standing in the middle of a day you don't recognize, and every sound in it is coming at once. You've stopped being able to tell which one to answer first. So you answer none of them, and just try to keep breathing while the room keeps caving in.

You didn't ask for silence. You asked for it to stop. But somewhere underneath the noise, if you go quiet enough to hear it, there's a voice that was never shouting to begin with — one that only ever says two things: be still, and know. Not fix. Not explain. Just: stop long enough to remember whose you are.

That's where you start. Not because the noise resolves. Because you finally hear something underneath it.

And then comes the part nobody prepares you for — the waiting. Not the dramatic kind, the kind with a clear ending in sight. The other kind. The kind where you've already surrendered the thing you can't control, and now there's nothing left to do but stay in the desert a little longer than you wanted to.

You start to wonder if the waiting itself means something's wrong. If a good plan would have moved faster than this. But the wait was never a delay in the plan. It was the plan — the place where you stop confusing His timing for His absence, and start believing there's purpose in the pain you haven't gotten an explanation for yet.

You don't get to skip this part. You're not supposed to. The wait is doing something in you the arrival never could.

Then, without warning, it turns.

Not because the hard thing stopped being hard. Because you finally look back at it and see what it was actually doing the whole time. The anger that forced you to your knees. The silence that taught you to actually listen instead of talk. The weakness that showed you — not told you, showed you — a strength that was never going to come from you in the first place.

And here's the part that undoes you: if He had spared you from any of it — the breaking, the drifting, the fire — you never would've known. Not known about. Known. The kind of knowing you only get from the other side of something you didn't think you'd survive.

You start saying thank you for things you would have begged Him to remove a year ago. Not because the pain was good. Because it was never wasted. Every bit of it was doing exactly what it needed to do, so that you could finally say — not as a phrase you learned, but as something you now actually possess — I never would've known how good God is.

That's the turn. Not spared. Shown.

And once you've seen it — once you know it instead of just knowing about it — something in you stops moving the way it used to.

You'd spent so long trying to hold your own ground. Bracing for the next storm, tightening your grip, hoping you'd built something sturdy enough to survive whatever came next. But sturdy was never the goal. Rooted was.

A tree doesn't survive the storm by holding on tighter. It survives because of what's underneath it, where nobody can see — roots that go down further than the wind can reach. And you find out, somewhere in this arc, that you were never planted by your own hand. You didn't dig your own roots down that deep. He did. Which means the drought doesn't threaten you the way it used to. The heat doesn't scare you the way it used to. You're not gripping anymore. You're just standing — held by something underground that was there long before the storm ever showed up.

Come hell or high water, you're not going anywhere. Not because you're strong. Because of where you're planted.

And once you're rooted — once you know it wasn't your grip holding you, but His hand planting you — there's nowhere left to go but home.

Not a place you have to search for. A place you already know, the way you know your own name. Every want you had before this arc started, every thing you thought you needed to feel secure, quiets down in a room like this one. There's nothing left to chase. Nothing left to prove. Just a face you've been longing to see, and the sudden realization that you don't need anything else once you've seen it.

You didn't get here by surviving on your own strength. You got here because He never once left the noise, the waiting, the turning, or the rooting to chance. Every part of it led here — to a house where you finally stop needing an explanation, because you're standing in the presence of the only answer that was ever going to be enough.

You never would've known any of it, if He had spared you the road that got you here.

Not spared. Shown.

That's NEVER WOULD'VE KNOWN. That's the journey.
