Yesterday's chapter said polite gratitude doesn't fit what Jesus actually did. Today's Faith Builder looks at the moment Jesus Himself explained why.
A Dinner Party Gone Sideways
In Luke 7, Jesus is eating at the home of a Pharisee named Simon — a respected religious man. In the middle of dinner, a woman "who lived a sinful life" comes in uninvited. She stands behind Jesus, weeping, and her tears fall on His feet. She wipes them with her hair, kisses His feet, and pours expensive perfume on them.
Simon is appalled — and says to himself that if Jesus were really a prophet, He'd know what kind of woman she is.
Two Debts
Jesus answers with a story. Two people owed money to a moneylender. One owed five hundred denarii, the other fifty. Neither could pay, so he canceled both debts. "Now which of them will love him more?" Simon gives the obvious answer: the one with the bigger debt canceled.
Then Jesus says it plainly in verse 47: "Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven — as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little."
The Real Difference
Here's the misconception worth naming: we tend to assume the composed, polite believer — the Simon — is the spiritually mature one, and the person on the floor in tears is the one with more growing up to do.
Jesus reverses that. And notice what the difference actually was. Simon didn't owe less in any ultimate sense — Romans 3:23 says all have sinned. The difference was that she knew what she owed, and he didn't think he owed much at all.
That's the whole point of Position 2. "I should've been dead and gone, so I just gotta give You thanks." That's not someone exaggerating. That's someone who's honestly done the math.
For This Week
If yesterday's Carry One Thing touch felt easy to skim — naming a gift, saying a quick thanks — try going one layer deeper today. Not just what He gave you. What He forgave you. The more honestly you know it, the less polite your gratitude will be.
