Every week on The JDOT Five comes with a challenge — something small, specific, and doable, meant to take the week's arc out of "nice idea" and into something you actually practice.
This Week: Breathed On
This week's challenge has three touches. Today, you'll replace the name shame calls you with the one God gives you — right where you'll see it every morning. On Thursday, you'll take ten minutes to read God's Word like a letter written to you. And on Saturday, you'll take one slow minute to notice the breath in your lungs — then go do one piece of good work God prepared for your hands.
Rename. Draw near. Breathe and go. That's the shape of OUT OF THE DUST in three small steps.
Touch One: Mirror Check
Shame usually starts talking first thing in the morning — often while you're standing in front of the mirror.
So today, get there first.
- Grab a sticky note. Write the name shame calls you. Failure. Fraud. Too much. Not enough. Too far gone. Be honest — it's just for you.
- Cross it out. Hard. Not because the feelings disappear overnight, but because that name doesn't get the final word.
- Underneath, write what God calls you. If you need a starting place, use Scripture: "the work of your hand" (Isaiah 64:8), "children of God" (Galatians 3:26), "God's handiwork" (Ephesians 2:10).
- Stick it on your bathroom mirror.
Every morning this week, before shame gets a word in, you'll see the name God gave you first.
Why This Matters
Today's chapter said shame isn't telling you the truth about who you are. Guilt says you did something wrong; shame says you are something wrong. A sticky note won't fix that by itself. But it interrupts the loop — and gives God's voice the first word of the day instead of the last.
We'll check back in on Thursday and again on Saturday.
